This department holds the honour of being the first unit in a public service hospital in Pakistan to offer a specialized rheumatology service and an accredited postgraduate training for this specialty in Pakistan. Currently more than 200 patients are evaluated and managed each day in the outpatients. It is presently recognised the hub for postgraduate training by both the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and the Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University.

Teaching Faculty at Rheumatology Department

The department has a single unit headed by Professor Wajahat Aziz (FCPS, MRCP, FACP, FACR, FRCP.) along with an Associate Professor Dr Uzma Rasheed (FCPS medicine, FCPS Rheumatology) and an Assistant Professor Dr Shazia Zammurrad (FCPS medicine, FCPS rheumatology)
The department of Rheumatology at PIMS is the largest facility of its kind in Pakistan providing cover to both adult and pediatric patients suffering from rheumatic disorders.

Head Of Department

Prof. Wajahat Aziz

Prof Wajahat Aziz is currently part of the Rheumatology core committee of College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and the SZABMU. He along with the founder of this unit, Prof Abid Zaheer Farooqi was instrumental in promoting the cause of Rheumatology in Pakistan. Their contribution along with other senior colleagues from Rheumatology helped to setup the speciality of rheumatology in the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and later in the SZABMU, Islamabad. Presently Prof. Wajahat Aziz along with Dr Uzma Rasheed and Dr Shazia Zammurrad are working with dedication to further raise the standard of care of Rheumatology in Pakistan. The department presently holds the honour of producing the most number of Fellows in rheumatology in the country who are now leading their own independent Rheumatology units throughout the country and beyond.

• Out Patient clinic six days a week
Round the clock, seven days a week cover for emergencies through the accident and emergency department and other departments of the hospital.
In door admission facilities for patients suffering from rheumatic disorders who need further evaluation or management.
Department has a dedicated state of the art infusion facility. Here chemo and biological therapies are administered. The trainees get a hands-on experience in the art of administering various biologic and other chemotherapeutic agents under the direct supervision of trained staff.Department has a specially trained Rheumatology Specialist Nurse for patient care, supervision and education.
The department id closely linked to the newly designed and fully functional physiotherapy department.
The department has a separate designated day care section for minor procedures and injection therapies.

•Socioeconomic burden of major rheumatic disease in tertiary care hospital.
•APLAR COPCORD grant: prevalence of major rheumatic diseases in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. A COPCORD survey.
•Physician burnout in rheumatology practitioners in Pakistan. A cross sectional survey.
•ILAR grant for the project: expanding rheumatology access to remote areas of Pakistan. A pilot tele rheumatology project.
•Quality of sleep in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
•To compare the efficacy of intra-articular steroid injection versus oxygen -ozone therapy in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
•Comparison of efficacy of amitryptaline versus duloxetine in fibromyalgic patients.
•Variation in FRAX score with and without BMD in patients with rheumatic diseases
•Effect and outcome of immunization in high risk patients suffering from autoimmune inflammatory diseases and oncological
•Predictors of primary response to methotrexate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
•Knowledge attitude and practices about infections and immunization in patients with autoimmune inflammatory disease and
   oncological disease patients in Pakistan
•Demographic features and common clinical presentations of SLE in northern areas of Pakistan presenting to PIMS
