Pathology

Overview

Pathology department was established in 1986. Dr. Khursheed Ahmad was the first Head of Pathology department. IH lab was the first component to be established followed by CH lab and MCH lab. Pathology Department is dynamically active in patient care, teaching, research administration and coordination. It caters patients of Islamabad / Rawalpindi, ICT & Northern areas of Pakistan. Soon after being established the department offered academic programs to residents including MPhil histopathology, chemical Pathology, microbiology and haematology followed by FCPS and MD histopathology. The department has 5 sections The sections include Histopathology & cytopathology, Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, Blood transfusion services. The laboratories are located at Islamabad Hospital, Children Hospital, Mother & Child Health (MCH) centre and Burn Care Centre (BCC).
Approximately 7 million tests / year are conducted in Pathology department. Procedures of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) and Bone marrows performed in 3000 and 1500 patients / year respectively.

COVID-19

COVID-19 testing Lab (Pocket PCR):  In Covid Pandemic, one of the greatest challenges was establishment of COVID-19 testing sample collection centre and laboratory. With a strong commitment in collaboration with WHO, pocket PCR laboratory was established in a resource-limited setting in microbiology department, at a point in time when laboratory capacity expansion was most critical to cater the needs of health care workers of our hospital. Mr Muhammad Shafiq ( medical technologist microbiology) started the first pocket PCR testing in Pims.
About Sample Collection :Specimen collection is done at Following Collection Points.
Islamabad Hospital Lab (IH lab )
Children Hospital Lab(CH lab)
Mother & Child Health Care Centre Lab(MCH Care Centre lab)
COVID sample collection is done at ABUBAKAR HALL near Helipad.

Future Plans

We plan to
Focus on Digital pathology which will allow a change from classical histopathological diagnosis with microscopes and glass slides to virtual microscopy on the computer, with multiple tools using artificial intelligence and machine learning to support pathologists in future work.
Start immune fluorescence studies especially for renal biopsies.
Establish a genetic lab
Develop an emergency lab to give reports to patients with lesser turnaround time
Extend chemistry lab menu
Start Flow cytometry, platelet aggregation studies, thrombo philia screening and factor assays with inhibitor screening
Start hepatitis screening parameters, mycology, and parasitology, MIC determination of antibiotics and to enhance bacterial identification with automation.
PIMS lab is heading towards ISO 15189 accreditation. Medical technologist Dr Muhammad Fiaz is Quality management representative of Pims lab. He has a wide range of responsibilities to help ensure proper implementation of the quality management system.
