Overview

The department of orthopaedics started functioning in March 1986, when the PIMS was formally commissioned. In the beginning it only provided the outpatient and emergency services. In 1987 regular indoor and operation theater facilities were added. It not only provides health care to the patients of Capital territory, but also looks after the referred patients from the northern Punjab, AJK, KPK and Gilgit.At present, it has 45 inpatient beds in SW-2,two operation theaters fully functional 6 days a week. The department provides outpatient facilities to some 3000 patients per month and 24/7 trauma care in the A&E department.Besides providing management of fractures, the elective surgeries include, arthoplasties (hip, knee, shoulder & elbow), complex osteotomies and Illizarovfixation , surgeries for DDH, CTEV, and polio .

The department of Orthopaedics has played a pivotal role in the management of mass casualties from numerous national disasters and terrorist attacks. To name a few, Ojhari camp explosion-1988, Egyptian embassy bomb blast-1997, Faisalabad gas explosion-1998, Bano arcade collapse-2003, Fath Jang terrorist attack-2004, Bari Imam bomb blast-2004, Earth Quake-2005, Siege of Lal Masjid-2007, î Ã‚olice Station bomb blast-2007, F-8 Lawyers convention bomb blast-2007, Luna Caprice bomb blast-2008, Marriot bombing-2008 and last but not the least, Air Blue plane crash-2010.
