  Department of General Surgery



The Department of General Surgery started providing its services in 1987. The outpatient services of the department are located in surgical clinic on ground floor which runs 6 days a week and caters for 150-200 patients per day. The department has three operation theatres in main OT suites and performs 500-600 elective and emergency operations per month. The indoor facilities are located in surgical ward 5 & 6 with 76 beds and extra beds are provided for emergency patients which are often required for 10-25 patients. Besides these, patients are admitted in Special Ward (Medical Ward-2), Private Ward first floor and even in other wards when required. There is state of art surgical intensive care unit with 12 beds with all equipment and facilities.

Soon after the establishment of the department postgraduate residency program was initiated, the aim being to produce surgeons who would devote their energies to raising the standards of surgery and by their performance to stimulate the youth of the country to study and practice surgery. A surgical grand round participated by all surgical and allied disciplines is organized every Friday morning for almost 20 years. A multidisciplinary meeting participated by the department and Radiology, Pathology and Oncology in collaboration with NORI, Islamabad is also held which is participated by most postgraduate trainees At present there are 50 postgraduate trainees in FCPS and MS programme which are recognized by CPSP, Quaid-e-Azam University. So far department has produced approximate 100 Surgeons. Professor S. Aslam Shah is currently the Head of Department. it is sub divided into four units.
