In the year 2005, the faculty
of the radiology Department has expanded. We
have now an Asistant Professor, Dr. Mujahid
Raza and a Senior Registrar, Dr. Nasir Khan,
both FPS qualified Radiologits, on our faculty.
In this year by the grace of God, 3 PC-I for
upgradation and extension of the Radiology Department
have been approved and should be implemented
in the next financial year.
Last year 4 MCPS and 2 FCPS students graduated
from our department.
The Radiology Department of Pakistan Institute
of Medical Sciences, Islamabad from its inception
in 1986 started as a smart, modern facility.
It was probably one of the best equipped Radiology
department in Pakistan. The Department of Radiology
is fully computerized and integrated with Hospital
Management Information System of PIMS.
At that time, there were 3 junior doctors in the department and one Specialist.
The department was recognized for full FCPS training in 1997 and is today the only recognized radiology department in the public sector for specialist radiology training in Rawalpindi/Islamabad.
It has now a faculty of 3 specialists, 1 senior registrar, 3 medical officers and 16 postgraduate students. It has 18 trained radiographers.
Since 1986, the department has produced :-
- 7 Fellows (FCPS).
- 20 Diploma holders (MCPS & DMRD).
The department now has a state of the art (Toshiba Asteion) Helical C.T.Scanner capable of performing high quality scans in less than 10 - 15 minutes.
We also have a Computed Radiography System, the only such system in the Government sector in Pakistan. This system enables us to digitize our x-rays, which can then be post processed, stored and archived.
This has put us on the path to achieve a fully Digitalized Radiology Department for the first time in Pakistan.
In our department registration and reports are fully computerized and are available on line for the entire hospital in connection with the on-going integrated computerization of the hospital.
The Children Hospital and Maternal & Child Health Centre have separate radiology facilities which are also part of the main department in Islamabad Hospital.
In an average month, the department churns out :-
- 6750 Plain x-rays.
- 1500 Ultrasounds.
- 150 Special Procedures.
- 600 C.T.Scans.
The Radiology department of PIMS has developed into a dynamic department and has some of the best trained doctors and radiographers in the country, and is easily the best equipped Radiology department in the Government sector in Pakistan.
