history in the health care system of the country
by achieving a landmark of establishing a full
fledged Department of Pharmacy in the Federal
Government Hospitals in 1986 for the first time,
when our present Chief Pharmacist A. Q. Javed
Iqbal was appointed as Pharmacist Children Hospital
at the time of its commissioning. Realizing
the importance of the Department of Pharmacy
and the contribution of a professionally competent
and legally qualified pharmacist in a hospital,
another batch of five more pharmacists was inducted
in 1987 at the time of commissioning of the
Islamabad Hospital.
Pharmacists in PIMS have an important consultative and management role. They are responsible for planning of Pharmaceutical services and the establishment and maintenance of safe systems of work within their department. So far, the Department of Pharmacy has done some very fruitful drug utilization studies and surveys in collaboration with WHO by collecting data on drug use and its results have been used for formulating safe and economical presenting practices.
The Chief Pharmacist of PIMS was trained by WHO in its Leadership Development Programme and he has MCPS in International Health from College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. Two other pharmacists did their PhD's from Japan whereas another Pharmacist completed his MPhil during this period.
All the pharmacists working in this department have thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions as well as the ability to conduct and participate in research activities. The Pharmacy department comprises of:
The department also arranges an eight week
Hospital Pharmacy Training Programme
for fresh university graduates, which
normally takes place round the year to accommodate
graduates of different universities from all
over the country.
" Allied Health Professionals " are the integral part of the Health Care System. Department of Pharmacy conduct teaching and on job training programmes at college of Medical Technology for students of Dispenser Courses and at Nursing College by teaching Pharmacology to Post Graduate Nursing Courses .
There is a Formulary Committee in PIMS which is headed by the Executive Director, and is managed by the Department of Pharmacy. The objectives of this committee are to ensure maximum use of available resources in making available the real needs of safe, effective, useful and good quality essential drugs on a regular basis in all the components of PIMS at the least possible cost.
The committee also ensures the rational and proper use of these essential drugs. Other objectives of this committee are to protect the health of the people against the hazards of using unsafe, ineffective or defective drugs and from the hazards of irrational use of drugs.
All the life saving drugs are provided free of cost to the patients coming to Emergency Accident Centre in PIMS. The department is also catering the needs of the general public with a wide range of 52 drugs in the OPD Pharmacy. A comprehensive variety of 110 life saving drugs are available for the Indoor patients which are also provided free of costs.
Department of Pharmacy arranges drugs/ medicines and surgical material & implants for zakat deserving patients worth Rs 15 Million per year allocated out of the Zakat fund in collaboration with Social Welfare Department of PIMS. Pakistan Baitul Mal is another source for needy and the poor patient , which helps the deserving Muslim as well as Non Muslim patients. Their requirements are arranged through the Department of Pharmacy.
At present there are two volunteer Pharmacists from Japan Miss Naoko & Miss Miako who are working in PIMS, for a period of 2 years and are doing a positive contribution in the daily working of the department.
The department of Pharmacy is process of computerization, which will help in better inventory control and improved service for the patients. This will also help for better coordination with medical, nursing and other services.
An Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting System has recently been introduced at PIMS, where such information shall be shared at National level to avoid any future incidents, since the Pharmacy Department is primary source of information concerning drugs.
We have plans to start a Drug Information Centre, where scientific information and data about drugs shall be continuously collected from reliable sources. Furthermore it shall be evaluated and the useful information will be disseminated to the members of health profession .
