The Department of Neurosurgery started with
the inception of this institute in 1986. Dr.
Khaleeq-uz-Zaman joined Prof. M Shaffi in 1988.
Prof. M Shafi retired in 1993 and Prof. Khaleeq-uz-Zaman
is heading the department since then with the
help of his team consistent of three qualified
neurosurgeons, In addition the team consists
of two medical officers, 10 residents, 17 nurses
and 13 supporting staff.
The department attends 900-1000 patients per month in outpatients, performs 600-700 operations per year and admits 1500-1600 patients every year. It provides emergency cover round the clock and serves the most of the north of Pakistan including NWFP.
It runs an active structured academic teaching program both for MS and FCPS qualifications. Weekly teachings include presentations, principles of operative surgery, clinical skills development, clinical audit, journal club, clinicopathological meetings and presentations in grand rounds. Regular courses, workshops and seminars are organized where the participants come from all over Pakistan. The department has organized two international conferences of neurosurgery. It is also involved in conducting medical education and continuous professional development programs both inside the country as well as abroad e.g. Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Bangladesh. There were 13 students who have passed FCPS and 5 have passed MS in neurosurgery from this department. Two students have completed the training are due to appear in the exam in 2004.
The department is actively involved in research. So far 45 papers are published and 48 papers are presented in national and international conferences. The delegates from the department have represented Pakistan in South Korea, Mexico, Dubai, Japan, Bangladesh, Austria and Hong Kong. There are 8 research projects in progress. It has also contributed to the WHO programs as coordinators of accident prevention, disability prevention and disaster management programs. It has also been involved in community social work by arranging free medical camps and public educational programs by publishing articles of public interest in newspapers producing television and radio programs on head injury, spinal injury, accident prevention and disability prevention.
The department has also been able to raise funds to furnish the whole department and establish a learning resource center called "academic enclave" on self-help basis.
The department believes in teamwork and to this end gone through a human behavioral improvement workshop. The working environment is further improved by regular outings, picnics and other social activities and there is a family like atmosphere.
The department believes in "service is better than duty". It has a vision to develop a center of excellence of international standard where clinical care of top quality, ample variety and required quantity is provided and where world-class leaders in the field of neurosurgery are produced. It has also the mission to make the best use of the facilities and expertise available to treat patients. It is also achieving the targets with present resources. It is providing first class neurosurgical emergency cover second to none. Every year one or two new procedures are performed to increase the variety of operations. Every year at least two papers are published. It also reviews its performance every six months (internal audit).
