The Neonatology Department provides services to the newborns at two components of PIMS, i.e. Children Hospital and MCH center. This department is the largest and one of the best units in Pakistan. It was started in 1987 in Children Hospital as Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and later an outpatient clinic was added. With the commissioning of MCH Center in 1999, neonatal services were extended to Labour room, operation theatre, MCH nursery and postnatal wards of MCH Center.
The department caters for 15 intensive care beds, 8 low dependency bed and over 40 postnatal beds, where babies are looked after with their mothers. The neonatal intensive care unit is equipped with all modern equipment including incubators, warmers, infant ventilators, infusion pumps, vital sign monitors, oximeters, phototherapy units, blood warmer and bilirubinometer etc. In addition, department has its own mobile X-Rays and Ultrasound machine for bedside imaging. The nursing staff of department is highly qualified and trained specially in the care of newborns. Many of our nurses have been trained abroad in the field of neonatology. In addition, doctors and nurses especially visited from Japan and trained our nurses and other staff on the job in NICU.
The doctors of neonatology department examine all babies born in MCH Center and those in need of special care are kept in MCH nursery. Those babies requiring intensive care are brought to NICU of Children Hospital. In addition, there is a round the clock emergency service for high-risk deliveries and community referrals. The bed occupancy in NICU usually remains over 90 percent with the result that, sometimes community referrals are managed in general wards along with their mothers.
Academically, department is actively engaged in imparting training in the field of neonatology to all kinds of health professionals. All aspiring pediatricians had to undertake a mandatory rotation in Neonatology. In addition, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan recognizes this department for post fellowship training in the field of Neonatology. The department has also trained over 70 pediatricians from district and tehsil head quarter hospitals from all the provinces of Pakistan with the help of Ministry of health and Japan International Cooperation Agency under a government program `In country training program Safe Management of Newborn Infants`. There have been many publications from the neonatology department.
