The department of Gastroenterology was established at PIMS in November, 1986. Its component include an outpatient, endoscopy room, indoor with 20 beds and a computer room for research and academic activities. The department staff includes Dr Javed Aslam Butt as professor and head of department, Assistant Professor Dr. Tashfeen Adam and two senior registrars Dr. Quratulain Hyder and Dr. Inayat Adil. The other staff includes medical officers Dr.Noureen and Dr Amir Saleem, Post graduate students and House officers.

The department was recognized for post graduate training in Gastroenterology, in June 1994.It is equipped with latest diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies facilities including gastroscopy, colonoscopy ERCP, sclerotherapy and band ligation of esophageal varices, polypectomy, esophageal dilatation for strictures and achalasia cardia and foreign body removal.

PTC needle aspiration of liver/abdominal abscess and FNA of abdominal masses routinely carried out in collaboration with Radiology department.

Approximately 28000 diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures have been successfully performed since 1987 with an over all complication rate<2%. Ultrasound guided liver biopsy for Hepatitis C & B are regularly performed with a complication rate<0.7%.

The department has produced many Fellows (FCPS) in Gastroenterology and over twenty research papers. An active teaching and training program is going on in the department for post-graduate students of gastroenterology and General medicine as well as house officers.
