Dental Department of PIMS started functioning
in 1985 with five well equipped and ultramodern
Dental Surgery Units. Along with Dental Surgery
Units it has a small well equipped Dental laboratory
and one Orthopantomograph / Cephlograph x-ray
unit. On average 100 patients visit the Dental
Department (I.H) daily. The routine dental procedure
carried out in the department are analgam fillings
composite fillings, endodontics, inlays, onlays,
pin retained fillings, extractions, apicectomies
surgical extractors under L-A and G-A, periodental
procedures, minor surgical procedures under
G.A, Jaw fractures management under G.A and
other maxillo facial surgical procedure under
G.A.
In 1986 Dental Department in Children Hospital was established with two well equipped ultra modern Dental Units along with one Dental X-ray Unit. 45-50 patients visit dental department of children hospital every day. Dental procedures carried out include amalgam and esthetic fillings, root canal treatment in deciduous and permanent teeth, pin retained fillings, extractions, orthodontic assesment, serial extractions, minor surgical procedures under local anaesthesia management of fracture jaws under general anaesthesia, dental care of mentally handicapped patients under General Anesthesia.
In recent years one dental unit each in Islamabad Hospital and Children Hospital has been added to over come the long waiting list of patients needing dental treatment.
In 1992 M.D.S in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery was started in QPGMC, PIMS, this was a 3 years training program. In 2001 College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan recognized dental departments of PIMS for FCPS-II training in Operative Dentistry and Eight FCPS-II trainees have been inducted for 3-4 years training.
