Department of Cardiology at PIMS was established in 1986. This was an era when diagnostic and therapeutic cardiology was reshaping. Two-dimensional echocardiography, Doppler and Transesophageal techniques were added to M-mode. Angiography and cardiac catheterization were further advanced to Angioplasty and balloon valvotomy. In a very short time, hospital was able to gather and set up all these latest facilities.

At present, cardiology department can be compared to any best cardiac centre in the country and abroad.

It is equipped with a modern echocardiography laboratory in which Transthorcic, Transesophageal, and Stress- echocardiography procedures are done.

Department further has the facilities of ETT lab. Holter monitoring. It has a nuclear cardiology centre, and Cardiac Catheterization & Angiography laboratory.

Out patient of cardiology department is one of the busiest departments and monthly average patient turn out is 3000.

In door consists of 14 bed CCU and 31 bed cardiology ward. CCU is equipped with most modern cardiac monitoring systems with facilities of continuous ECG monitoring with central monitoring station, telemetry ECG monitoring , and invasive and noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring average admission / month in CCU is 250 and cardiology ward 900.

CCU, Cardiology ward, OPD dept, Echo/ ETT lab , and Nuclear / angiography lab. are interconnected by computer net working to the integrated hospital managment information system (HMIS) of PIMS.

Department has services of a highly qualified faculty. This has not only set the highest standards of patient care but has produced enormous talent of cardiologists at PIMS and in areas of the country. Department has four trained cardiologists working as consultants and a hierarchal medical staff which include senior registrars, junior registrars, medical officers, trainee postgraduate residents, and house officers.

Department has a formal postgraduate training program in FCPS and MD Cardiology.

It has trained 20 FCPS Trainees, two have passed and rest are in various phases of their training.

Advanced research in various disciplines of cardiology is being done and department has credit of 48 publications. A departmental library is set up which has collection of books and latest national and international journals. A computer with allied facilities is available in library to facilitate research and training. Department has scheduled teaching program stretched over the week

Department is annually organizing a 3 day international conference on cardiology updates from 4 years. Active involvement in various scientific seminars and conferences, national as well international is a norm to keep abreast with the latest knowledge & technique. Collaboration with other departments of the hospital in patient management and teaching cardiological aspects of disease to postgraduate trainees of other specialties of PIMS & other hospitals is carried out on regular basis.

Recently, PC 1 for establishing cardiac surgery has been put by the hospital which will transform this unit into a state of the art cardiac centre.
