Paediatric surgical department of the Children's Hospital, PIMS, is a very busy tertiary care unit of this hospital. Paediatric surgery is a relatively new specialty in Pakistan and there are only thirteen units of paediatric surgery throughout Pakistan and our unit is one of the leading units. There is a fifty bedded paediatric surgical ward with additional beds available in paediatric intensive care unit and neonatal intensive care unit. Since its inception in 1986, the unit has progressed steadily to its present shape. All types of paediatric surgical and neonatal surgical problems are handled both elective and acute including general paediatric surgery, neonatal surgery, paediatric urology, orthopedics, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery burns, neurosurgery, E.N.T., Eye, Dental and maxilogacial surgery. We have a huge catchment area and complicated cases are referred from far flung areas of NWFP, Afghanistan, Azad Kashmir and north of Punjab.

The paediatric surgery department is a big unit headed by professor of paediatric surgery, Prof. Muhammad Zaheer Abbasi. Other staffing includes Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, two senior registrars, one registrar, four FCPS- Part.II paediatric surgery trainees, seven M.S. paediatric surgery trainees and four to six house officers. The help in more complicated cases is available from our colleagues in the adult hospital especially in the field of orthopadics, neurosurgery, ENT, and Eye. We have an independent theatre complex equipped with facilities for a variety of procedures including rigid and fibreoptic bronchoscopes of all sizes for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, cystoscopes, upper and lower G.I endoscopes, image intensifier, operating microscopes, state of the art paediatric and neonatal anaesthesia machines with modern monitoring devices and facility of postoperative ventilatory support for paediatric and neonatal patients. Regular liaison with our colleagues in paediatric medicine, neonatology, oncology, pathology and radiology benefits our patients tremendously.

We have a very busy outpatient department and approximately thirty thousand patients are seen annually. The average admission in ward is about 3000 cases per year and approximately 3500 operations are performed annually including day case surgery.

We have a regular and active teaching program and a large number of doctors were trained in our department; out of these 14 have already passed FCPS Part.II paediatric surgery, 2 have passed M.S. paediatric surgery and 9 have passed FRCS from U.K. Our department is recognized by College of Physician and Surgeons and Quaid-I-Azam University for FCPS and MS in paediatric surgery and for MRCS and FRCS by Royal Colleges of U.K..

In addition to paediatric surgery trainees we regularly trainee the doctors rotated from other disciplines including General Surgery, Neurosurgery, urology, plastic surgery, orthopaedic and paediatric medicine. Medical students are also trained during their electives from other parts of the country and abroad.

The department is also involved in research activities and more than 200 research papers were published in national and international medical journals in addition to six books on different aspects of paediatric surgery. The different staff members of the department regularly participated in various national and international medical conferences and more than 500 scientific papers have been presented in national and international conferences of paediatric surgery, paediatrics, general surgery, urology etc over the years.

We have organized six courses for FCPS.II paediatric surgery as well as organized two international conferences of paediatric surgery. Our senior staff regularly visits the other paediatric surgery departments as guest speakers to contribute in their departmental academic activities. We routinely hold joint academic meetings with paediatric surgical department of other cities of Pakistan. In addition our unit takes active part in clinicopathological meetings of Children's Hospital, Islamabad Hospital and society of Surgeons. Our department has the privilege of visits of many distinguished paediatric surgeon from around the world including United Kingdom, United States of America, Spain, India and Japan. Our trainees benefited tremendously from their visits.

We have established the museum of paediatric surgery, which is one of the best of its kind in the country comprising a very large number of rare pathological specimens. Our former professor of paediatric surgery, Prof. M. Naeem Khan was instrumental in establishing this museum.

As 45% of population of country is comprising of children paediatric surgery is emerging as a highly specialized field of medical sciences, but very few centers are present in the country. The department is aiming to bridge this gap by training maximum number of paediatric surgeons. We actively are pursuing to start post fellowship diploma in neonatal surgery.
