The department of Orthopaedic Surgery started functioning in March 1986, when PIMS was formally commissioned. In the beginning the department was providing only outpatient and emergency services, with its limited staff headed by Prof. Muhammad Aslam Piracha. In 1987 regular indoor services were also added along with the inauguration of the operation theatre facilities. The initial staff included Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Medical Officers, but with the inception of Quaid-e-Azam Postgraduate Medical College, students were enrolled for awarding M.S. degrees and for training of FCPS-II courses in Orthopaedic Surgery.
The department of Orthopaedic Surgery at present has 45 beds in SW-2. It provides emergency care for patients of Musculo-skeletal trauma received from the Northern half of the Pakistan, as well as almost two thousand patients are seen every month in the out patient.
All Orthopaedic Surgery procedures are carried out in this department including replacement of knee, hip and shoulder joints, management (non-operative and operative) of fractures of adults as well as complicated fractures of children referred from the children hospital, congenital disorder e.g. Congenital dislocation of hip and congenital talipes equinovarus deformities as well as management of patients with diseases like poliomyelitis etc. Similarly wide varieties of sports injuries are also looked after with special interest.
The department of Orthopaedic Surgery is currently headed by Dr. Muhammad Abdul Mateen FCPS (Orthopedics) who is incharge of UNIT-I with Dr. Ali Akhtar FCPS (Orthopedics) as the Senior Registrar. Dr. Imran Sikandar Khan FRCS is incharge of UNIT-II with Dr. Rizwan Hameed Malik FRCS as the Assistant Professor.
Each unit has registrars and postgraduate residents receiving training in FCPS-II and M.S. courses in Orthopaedic Surgery as well as students doing their rotation for FCPS-II and M.S. in General Surgery.
