  Department of Burn Center

BURN CARE CENTER AT PIMS ISLAMABAD

• A state of the art Burn Care Center (BCC) has been completed at PIMS. This is the first of its kind in the public sector of Pakistan and rather south Asia is in accordance with the latest International standards for the management of Acute Burn Care and long-term sequel.

• Burn surgery is emerging new sub-specialty and dedicated teams working in such centers of developed world have reduced the mortality and morbidity rate to less than 50%.

• Burn victim’s mortality rate in Pakistan is beyond proportion when compared with other countries. For instance, in our country, Mortality rate of a major burn i.e. 40-50% body surface area, is 86%, whereas it is less than 20% in developed world.

• There are inadequate facilities for the management of Burn patients in the existing public and private sectors hospitals. Under defense budget, there are Burns Centers at CMH Kharian, NESCOM Islamabad and POF Wah, where mostly the beneficiaries are defense personal and few civil patients who can afford heavy expenses of treatment cost.

• The cost of burn care is enormous, over and above ICU care. The cost for the medicines and supplies for these patients can be from Rs: 4000 to 12000 per day depending upon % of burn.

• Acute burn patients require specialized intensive care by trained technical staff. Burn patients need germ free environment, with monitoring and ventilatory equipments. Controlled temperature and humidity are also the basic requirements.

• Dr Tariq Iqbal, Assistant Professor and Head of this BCC has dedicated himself entirely for the management of burns patients. He has prepared the PC-1 for this project, which was prepared after studying various international Burns centers. The project was approved in August 2003 by the CDWP, but the construction work started in January 2005 with a total cost of 400 Million. Funds were allocated through PSDP. He is also the Project Manager for this project and prepared and monitored, on day-to-day basis, each and every detail of this project including the procurement of very high tech bio-medical equipment, under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Syed Fazle Hadi, Project Director/ Executive Director PIMS Islamabad.

• We have every reason to be proud of this state-of-the-art facility as a high level delegate of WHO recently visited the center and described it one of the best burn care center in the world.

• Special thanks to Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Federal Minister of Health and Federal Secretary Health for their personal interest in the project as they have visited the site multiple times during the construction of this state-of-the-art center.

This 20 bedded high tech state-of-the-art center is equipped with all the modern facilities for the management of acute burn injuries. There are separate rooms for each patient with special burn beds and latest monitoring equipments. The center is unique in many aspects, e.g.: -

• The Nursing Care is the most important aspect of Burn management and in accordance with international standards there is one nurse one patient ratio i.e. three nurses in 24 hrs for one patient.

• There are two state-of-the-art modular operation theaters (introduced first time in Pakistan) with Laminar flow 100% clean air with latest HVAC system and equipped with latest tools and gadgets.

• The center also have a Dialysis Unit with CRRT, an Endoscopy unit, an express laboratory, a blood bank, Skin Bank, latest Central gases supply system, CSSD, laundry, kitchen and physiotherapy/rehabilitation center.

• The center also has latest showering units and hydrotherapy pools with hydraulic patient transfer trolleys.

In collaboration with Euro Skin Bank (ESB) of Netherlands, the center will also use human Allograft skin (GPA) for the management of major burns.

In addition to treating acute burn injuries the center will also be the focal point for research and also training of health personals. Public awareness programs will be introduced through print and electronic media, for first aid burn management and preventive measures.
